Kisumu County has announced that it is well equipped to supply the lakeside residents with clean and adequate water up-to 2050.
Dr. John Nyaoro, a reputed water expert told a conference in Kisumu on Wednesday that in 2010, Kisumu had 3.2 billion Cubic Liters which was projected to increase to 12.5 billion Cubic Meters by 2030 and finally 20.5 billion Cubic Litres by 2050.
Nyaoro stated that in order to fully sustain the economic and industrial needs of the County such as horticultural development a lot still needed to be done to achieve the 46 billion Cubic Meters mark projected by water experts.
He made the remarks during a Kisumu County Water Investment Conference at a local hotel.
Nyaoro revealed that River Kibos accounts for 40% of the water supply to Kisumu city while 60% comes from Lake Victoria.
He however informed the forum that Sondu/Miriu has the capacity to supply 1billion Cubic Liters of water through gravity alongside power generation though its potential was not fully tapped into.
Kisumu Governor, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o observed water remains a major factor in production but opportunities for investment in this sector have remained largely untapped.
Prof. Nyong’o noted that there was urgent need to use Lake Victoria waters for Maritime transport and sporting activities to spur economic growth through the Tourism sector.
He revealed his administrations envisages to increase water supply to its residents by pumping water in tanks to be installed at Riat hills that will be redirected to residents by gravity hence cutting-down on pumping cost.
Prof. Nyong’o added that Kenya Airways Authority (KAA) has set aside 50 Acres of land and a further 50Acres on the lake to open up a new Airport adjacent to the already existing Kisumu International Airport.
Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO), Managing Director, Eng. David Onyango urged stakeholders to exploit the immense interests in Kisumu to launch the county on a transformative trajectory of development.
