Kisumu County cross-country championship winners Philip Odero and Joyce Jebet are aiming higher after putting up a stellar show to win the 10km event over the weekend.Odero, who finished the race just a minute ahead of his closest challenger Alex Maina, needed 41 minutes 56.76 seconds to floor his opponent who clocked 42 minutes and 12.46 seconds while Evan Githira came third in 43 minutes and 53.30 seconds.Speaking during a training session ahead of this weekend’s regional championships which will be used to select a team to represent the region in the nationals in under two weeks time, Odero said competition will be tough but he is ready.“I know other counties have produced their best and it’s really going to be tough but I am optimistic of representing Nyanza North region in Nairobi,” said the Kisumu Polytechnic student who hopes the weather will be favourable on Saturday.“I could have done better with my timing but I was taken aback by the hot weather and poor terrain but I am hopeful of finishing in a good time in the upcoming regional championships,” he added. Jebet too wants to improve her time after an injury forced her to slow down last weekend.“We are staring at a tough championship and my goal is to work towards improving on my time because last week was one of my lowest moments,” said Jebet, who clocked 54 minutes and 44.65 seconds. The duo will be competing against other athletes from Siaya and Homa Bay counties who qualified to participate in the regional selection for a slot in Nairobi.Meanwhile, Okanda Mangla has been elected the new Kisumu County Secondary Schools Sports Association chairman after he floored his opponents in the election that was conducted on Monday.
