Kisumu County Assembly’s deputy speaker Pamela Omino was rushed to the hospital today after she was involved in a tussle with sergeants-at-arms who were barring her from chairing the session.

The two-hour standoff ensued after Omino declined to allow acting speaker Gabriel Ochieng from chairing the session.

After wide consultations, the MCAs agreed to allow Samuel Ombogo who is in the speaker’s panel to lead the members during the session against the wish of Omino.

As the mace was taken to the assembly for the start of the session, Omino joined the line and was intercepted by a sergeant at arm who wrestled her to a chair before she slipped to the ground.

She started writhing in pain while wailing uncontrollably before she was taken outside the assembly hall and driven to the hospital.

The assembly was immediately adjourned as members of the public tried to access the assembly forcing police officers to take charge.

The MCAs yesterday met to end the stalemate and agreed to recognise the position of Omino but failed to allow her to chair the assembly sessions.

Omino said most MCAs pleaded with her to deputise the acting speaker noting that in law, she is the deputy speaker in the absence of the speaker.

She insisted that she will chair the assembly sessions together with the speaker’s panel from today.

Omino last week broke into the speaker’s office and assumed her role as the deputy speaker against the wishes of other MCAs.
