The intervention by the area’s CDF committee came after public health officials raised concern over the state of classrooms at the school and the neighbouring Angira Primary School after they developed cracks that pose a health risk to both students and teachers.

Kisumu East Sub-County Director of Education Jane Mathenge stated that the activities at the nearby quarry are to blame for the state of the classrooms noting that action should be taken to deal with the situation.

The school and residents recently staged demonstrations to protest the activities at the quarry which they say are to blame for the current state of classrooms and houses in the area.

“Classrooms in these schools pose a great risk to the students yet quarry owners have turned a deaf ear to our plea,” stated Mathenge in a letter addressed to CDF manager, National Environment Management Authority, County Structural Engineer, Director of Mines and Geology and Director of Natural Resources.

The school principal Joyce Akech noted that the quarry has caused cracks on houses and schools in the area adding that a lasting  solution should be reached soon to contain with the situation.
