Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir has condemned the relocation of the Kachok dumpsite to his constituency.
Shabbir said that county government has not called for public participation and also a proper environmental assessment has not been done and thus he has vowed to stop any relocation attempt by whichever means.
“I will not allow relocation of the dumpsite. It will not happen, over my dead body. If they want to kill me, let them kill me,” Shabbir told reporters.
This comes days after Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o flagged off trucks transporting waste from Kachok dumpsite located near Moi Stadium in the Central Business District to the new dumpsite at five-acre quarry land in Kajulu.
The city manager Doris Ombara had estimated the relocation to cost Sh 99.3million as Sh19,850 will be paid for each of the 5,000 trips to Kajulu.
Nyong'o added that they did a proper environmental assessment that has been approved by the National Environment Management Authority.
“We got the best advice from environment experts from the University of Nairobi. Nothing will go wrong,” said Nyong'o on Saturday at the flagship of the truck to the New site.
Ombara added that the plastic waste will be placed at the bottom so as to prevent waste penetration into the soil.
Nyong'o has been backed by Kisumu Senator Fred Outa and the county assembly speaker Onyango Oloo who said the relocation will help to clean the CBD.
