Kisumu County landlords are on the spot for allegedly charging high house rents that are not commensurate to the house demands.

Kisumu County residents’ spokesperson Audi Ogada lashed out at the landlords for charging high rates that are not commensurate to the service.

Speaking on Tuesday at a Kisumu hotel to the press, Audi observed that the house owners were demanding too much on rents, urging them to reduce the rates depending on the tenants’ agreement but not abrupt notices on rent increments.

“Let us demand house rates that is commensurate to the services we receive, like proper housing, wall system for tight security, proper sewer and water usage,” he said.

“Locals have various budgets to attend to, and I am requesting landlords not to increase housing charges abruptly without prior notice to the tenants to avoid altering tenants’ agreement,” said Audi.

He noted that landlords needed not to overcharge the tenants, adding that some landlords were taking advantage of their tenants by charging heavily.

Kisumu World Vision Agents housing Chairperson James Ojuka also challenged the landlords to improve the housing status and its security for better services to the residents.

“We need to have reasonable pricing, where the rent is commensurate with the services offered and the house status as well,” noted Ojuka.
