The county government of Kisumu has embarked on sprucing drainage lines in the city in a move to prevent flooding of roads.
Following the heavy rains that are still pounding the country, sections of city roads get flooded blocking the drainage system.
The drainages are mainly choked by plastic bottles and the banned polythene bags which prevent the flow of water during rains.
This therefore leads to over flow of water which then enters the roads and interferes with the flow of traffic and even movement of pedestrians.
In some cases, blocked sewer lines have also released waste products to the surface after blockage.
Despite the ban on polythene bags, plastic bottles are still a recurrent menace which has elicited mixed reactions with some health and environment stakeholders asking the government to also ban their usage in the county.
Kisumu County Environmental Director Arthur Aura said that manufactures of such products should device effective take-back mechanisms which will help reduce on their effects.
“They should know that they are also obliged to protect the environment. Their obsession with profits without caution is chocking our country to death,” stated Aura.
