Kisumu County has emerged the leader among Nyanza Counties in the first phase of mass voter listing which was held between February 15 and March 15.

According to the results released on March 22 by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kisumu recorded 59,611 new voters.

Siaya County came second with 53,496 while Homa Bay came distant third with 46,511.

With the impressive digits, Kisumu however trailed Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori Counties in percentage turnout compared to the targets put by IEBC.

Kisumu's figures were 44 per cent of the 132,678 new voters which the commission had targeted to register in the area.

Siaya's figures represented 51 per cent of its targets while Migori and Homa Bay registered 53 and 48 per cent of their targets respectively.

Nyamira County was however ranked the worst performing county in the exercise, registering a paltry 17, 884 new voters, representing 29 per cent of its targets. Migori registered 44, 423 new voters while Kisii County managed 28, 712 which represented just 28 per cent of its targets.

The Commission has however, indicated that those who failed to register during the first phase will have the opportunity in the second phase which commences in February 2017 or get to the Constituency offices to take advantage of the continuous voter listing exercise.
