Maurice Kegonye was sentenced by Kisumu chief magistrate Catherine Owino for the offence he committed on October 29 last year in Migosi, Kisumu.

Kegonye had denied the charges during the previous two hearings when he recanted his plea on April 3 when he appeared before the court for a hearing.

The court heard that, Kegonye waylaid Catherine Omwega where he threatened her with a knife and ordered her to hand over all the cash she had on her.

At that moment, Omwega had Sh2,000 which she handed over.

The matter was reported at Kondele police station and Omwega led the police to the residence of her attacker.

Kegonye in his defence said that he was desperate for money and he had tried all means to acquire some cash but failed. He asked the court to allow him repay the money back.

He was also apologetic for wasting the court's time by not pleading guilty in the first place for the offence he knew he had committed.

Magistrate Owino, however, said that it was good that he had pleaded guilty, but he had to be punished for the committing the offence in the first place.
