Unemployment, poverty, ethnicity and illiteracy have been cited as some of the causes of cases of Post-Election Violence (PEV).
A report by the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) has indicated that most of the Counties affected by such factors include Mandera, Siaya, Narok, Bomet, Isiolo, Kisumu among others.
Speaking during the launch of a report on Elections Crimes and Offenses in Kenya, NCRC principal researcher Stephen Muteti said insecurity after election results are announced was the sole cause of robbery, killings, attacks among other criminal activities, related to PEV.
"Analysis with regards to contributing factors, ethnic animosity was most prevalent in Marsabit, Garrissa and Tana River. Poverty was in Siaya, Narok, Laikipia. Illiteracy was reported in Bomet, Kakamega and Isiolo," Muteti said at the Laico Regency Hotel, Nairobi.
"Incitements were highest mentioned in Bomet, Narok and Kisumu," he added, Thursday.
Muteti called on the government and stakeholders to put in place necessary measures such as sensitization and public awareness campaigns to ensure citizens are educated on importance of embracing peace and unity before, during and after elections.
"So, as we move forward to 2017, kindly let us take note of the Counties that have been hardest hit by some of this factors and help in ensuring their stability," he said.
Also present during the event was Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai who urged Kenyans to embrace peace.
