Kisumu County Assembly has passed a motion to upgrade sports facilities in Kisumu city and its 7 sub-counties.
The motion was tabled by Nyalenda B ward representative James Were on Wednesday afternoon and seconded by Koru MCA Willis Mideu.
Were said that Moi Stadium was upgraded by FIFA to the tune of Sh50 Million but it cannot facilitate night games for lack of floodlights.
"It lacks of strong perimeter wall to protect the players from fans. Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground faces the same problem. There is total darkness and the pitch is in pathetic situation," said Were.
"Let us improve our facilities to attract more users. The county collected revenue of Sh300,000 in Gor Mahia verse Ushuru game last weekend," noted Mideu.
Mideu said that the county should expand and upgrade sports facilities in the sub-counties to help nature talents in the rural area.
Nominated MCA Farida Salim said that with the analysis of budget estimates 2015/2016 the county has allocated Sh4.5 million for maintaining sports facilities.
"Moi Stadium needs proper upgrading, Sh4.5 Million is a drop in the ocean. The stadium lacks proper sanitary facilities, security is an issue and terraces need to set up with chairs," said Salim.
Nominated MCA Caroline Agwanda said that the sport facilities need to be user friendly to people living with disabilities.
Agwanda said that Moi Stadium and Kenyatta sports ground are fitted with such accessories.
Kisumu attracts Paralympics resulting in more revenue collection.
