The teachers allied Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have said that if indeed they are to be evaluated, the government would realise that they have been underpaying teachers for a very long time.

Migori KUPPET Chairman Kennedy Makasembo said the government should stop using lies and propaganda in solving the teachers’ salary stalemate.

Makasembo said teachers undertake more roles that cannot not be quantified by the government’s planned job evaluation.

He said as teachers they have always been instructors, matrons, watchmen and trainers of the children both in academics and in co-curricular activities.

The official pointed out that currently there is a shortage of teachers which has led to the remaining ones overstretching themselves to bridge the gap.

The Kisumu County KUPPET chair Zablon Awange however said the job evaluation was a tactic by the government to scare away teachers from the strike.

Awange said job evaluation already exists and they are not sure which type of evaluation the government wants because it has been always used in promotion and transfers of teachers.

He said the government cannot introduce a job evaluation on determining the salary increment yet they are paid peanuts.

He said if they want to evaluate them on salary increment then they should improve schools facilities, infrastructure and even increase their salaries as of those in the private schools.

He said job evaluation cannot be pegged to salaries until other aspects have been modified.
