Services at various hospitals in Kisumu have been paralyzed after mortuary attendants went on a go slow over low pay and poor working conditions.
The morticians claim that their work has also been affected by the ongoing doctors strike as most of the bodies brought in their facilities needed to be operated on by doctors.
"We have received several bodies that needed postmortem but we cannot handle them because a doctor has to be present." said Ombegi of the Jaramogi Teaching and Referal Hospital.
Ombegi further said they are forced to release bodies without knowing the cause of the deaths.
Geoffrey Baraza, his colleague at the facility also said the conditions under which they work in are pathetic and they don't have any protective gear or clothing.
"We need protective clothing like gloves and surgical masks when handling bodies," he said.
