Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma says that he is in talks with Siaya Governor Cornell Rasanga and Home Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti to revive cotton farming back to its glory days in Nyanza Region.

"It is something we are prepared to do and make sure we revive cotton growth in the Nyanza region," said said Ranguma.

Speaking in Kisumu on Sunday, Ranguma said that cotton growing in Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Siaya and Busia collapsed because of payment hitches.

"Why do you think Cotton collapsed in this counties, because the farmers were not being paid properly," said Ranguma.

He added: "When you revive a factory you must look at the entire value chain. If I bring KICOMI where will I get cotton? You must consider the farmers pay. When I was a young man, KICOMI used to employ 3,000 workers and they had tailoring and textile Union."

Ranguma said that the county government is toothless because some functions are national government oriented.

"We want the cotton seeds to be available to the farmers. We are working with Brazilian government to develop a cotton seed that will give the farmer high returns and give us the cotton we want to start a ginnery," he said.
