Majority of Kisumu Members of the County Assembly have welcomed the decision by Cord to suspend the anti-IEBC demonstrations for 10 days to pave way for dialogue.
However, they have warned that the demos will resume should there be no concrete progress made in addressing the thorny IEBC issue.
This comes barely a day after the Cord coalition through the Secretariat co-chaired by Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama and his Siaya counterpart James Orengo declared the weekly protests have been suspended to give dialogue a chance in a bid to unlock the stalemate surrounding the fate of the poll body commissioners.
Kondele MCA Gabriel Ochieng' said he welcomes the decision by the opposition leaders to suspend the weekly street protests by 10 days.
However, he said the Jubilee coalition should prove that they are ready to engage the opposition in a meaningful and constructive dialogue over the issue of IEBC.
He added that he doesn't want the situation where the government will resort to the game of cheating them, something he says will make them to go to the streets again.
"I believe that the government is going to listen to Cord this time round. But if there will be nothing meaningful achieved after 10 days of the suspension, we just go back to our demonstrations. Because that is the only way to express our dissent," said Mr Ochieng.
His sentiment was backed by nominated MCA Faridah Salim who said the government should make good use of the 10 days period to hold dialogue with the opposition.
"Let the government take advantage of this time to dialogue with the opposition. Failure to do that will make us go back to the streets to demand that IEBC commissioners go home," said Ms Salim.
Former Muhoroni MP who is also the ODM Chairman Kisumu County Prof Ayiecko Olweny also agreed with the suspension but he said it is not over yet. To him, if no constructive dialogue takes place, they will be back to the streets.
