Victims of post-election protests in Kisumu Town on Wednesday received relief food courtesy of The Hindu Council of Kenya Kisumu Branch and The Red Cross Society.

The exercise is aimed at distributing food to families that were hardest hit by the post-election demonstrations that rocked Kisumu after the announcement of the presidential poll results.

The initial phase of the program launched on 23rd August 2017, saw the food distributed to families in Nyalenda, Nyamasaria, Manyatta, Obunga and Kondele as plans to widen the reach of the charity project to other outskirts of the Lake Side City are underway.

Hindu Council of Kenya-Kisumu Branch chairlady Mrs. Kalpana Karia disclosed that the initiative will also bring on board medical and counseling services to victims.

She said the organization will also rollout follow-up visits so as to help in the monitoring of the healing process of the affected families.

Secretary Mr. Ramesh Mehta said that they got the names of the affected victims from the Red Cross Society of Kenya adding that more families were set to benefit after being registered.

“Our chief objective is to help the needy. We plan to give food supplies to over 750 people who were affected during the protests,” he added.

The beneficiaries received maize floor, rice, cooking fat, sugar and milk.
