More than 200 housing units for civil servants are ready for occupation.

This follows the completion of a Sh729 million government-funded housing project in the lakeside town.

A circular by the Civil Servants Housing Fund (CSHSF) dated February 7, called on prospective buyers to apply for the 210 single, two and three-bedroomed apartments in Shauri Moyo, next to Kibuye Market.

Buyers are expected to pay 10 per cent of the purchase price by May 8, to stand a chance of owning one of the houses that are going for between Sh2.7 million and Sh6.1 million.

Similar houses put up by private developers in the area cost at least 20 per cent more.

Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Aidah Munano, said in the circular copied to regional commissioners that the houses would be financed by CSHSF under tenant purchase terms.

Interested buyers must be civil servants and are advised to apply for houses commensurate with their job grades.

According to Munano, an objective point system will be applied to determine buyers where houses attract more than one qualifying applicant. Balloting will be applied where two applicants tie.

"In order to ensure fairness, allocations will be limited to one house per civil servant. Priority will be given to first-time applicants," she said in the circular.

Other charges on the houses include stamp duty and transfers, insurance, mortgage protection, service and land rents as well as local authority rates.
