A section of the fishermen complained of how Kisumu lacked a government fish factory despite fishing being one of the main economic activities in the county.

They explained that they were being exploited as their fish is bought at a cheaper price then transported to Nairobi for manufacturing where it is sold at a relatively higher price.

The fishermen also noted that setting up a fish factory in the city would create employment to Kisumu residents and lead to economic growth of the county.

Speaking to a Hivisasa writer at Lwang'ni beach in Kisumu, John Okello a fisherman at Lake Victoria said:

"We would like to ask the County Government through Governor Nyong'o to construct a fish factory here in Kisumu. Fishing is one of the main economic activities in Kisumu. Though for the many years fishing has taken place in this City we have never witnessed a fish factory in Kisumu set up by the Government."

"Fishing is one of the economic activities that led to the growth of Kisumu City. We would love to ask the County Governor Professor Anyang Nyong'o to set funds aside for the construction of a fish factory in this city. We are not asking for a fish factory for our own selfish gains as the factory will also create employment opportunities to the residents of this City," another fisherman, Calvin Ouma added on.

The fishermen lauded Governor Nyongo's County projects and said they believed he would hear their cry and sort out the issue.
