A section of Kisumu residents took to the streets telling Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) to respect the opposition leaders.

A few hours before the EACC back-tracked on having Raila Odinga heed to summons over Eurobond investigations, the pro-Raila youth staged a peaceful protest, convened by the county’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) regional branch protesting alleged harassment targeting opposition leaders who condemn graft.

The supporters of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader took to the streets in their thousands demanding that EACC to stop treating Raila as a suspect.

The early morning demonstrations kicked off from Kondele where the protestors had converged, from where they walked all the way to to Oginga Odinga streets, town’s Central Business District (CBD) then to Jubilee Insurance building that houses the regional EACC office where they threatened to storm into the offices.

They braved the chilly weather, broke into song and dance along Angawa Avenue chanting the slogan, ‘explain Eurobond, explain Eurobond.

During this time, the doors of the Jubilee Insurance building were locked barring the protestors from submitting their memorandum to the EACC offices.

Later few leaders were allowed in and when they came out, they read the memorandum they had submitted to the anti-graft body.

Kondele Ward representative Gabriel Ochieng said, “Raila should not be treated as a suspect, he is the whistle blower and deserve to be treated better."

The residents called on the resignation of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto for failing to address corruption in the country.

The protestors later dispersed peacefully after word went round that EACC had back-tracked on their earlier demands.
