The county government of Kisumu has set plans to build a Sh800 million shilling sewerage treatment plant.
According to the CeC for Health and Sanitation, Dr. Rosemary Obara, the plant will be constructed at Otonglo area by Lake Victoria South Water Services Board.
Obara said that the funds allocated would be in a position to build two plants.
“The two plants will be able to treat up to 17,800 cubic metres of waste in Kisumu. We have had challenges in managing our sewerage since 16 percent of household s in Kisumu were connected to the public sewerage," she said.
“We want to resolve this issue before it gets out of hand, because we've always had a record of being the cleanest town in Kenya," she added.
Dr. Obara noted that residents were endangering their health and that of aquatic animals by depositing raw waste into Lake Victoria.
She warned residents against disposing waste on undesignated areas as they were posing a health risk to human and animals which could lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases like Cholera, Bilharzia and typhoid.
She called on concerted efforts by the county government to educate residents on waste management.
