Residents of Nyawitta Estate have called upon Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO) to replace plastic water pipes in the area to curb the frequent bursting of the pipes.
According to the residents, the water pipes in the area are majorly plastic and a majority are broken.
The residents fear the water might mix with waste and get contaminated.
The locals claim that water pipes are usually replaced whenever broken, but do not last long due their nature.
“The water pipes are usually replaced from time to time. It would be wise to find a lasting solution to the problem. We think that getting metal water pipes will be the best solution because the few metallic water pipes around have lasted for ages,” said Halima Otieno, a resident.
With the current rains, the water levels have increased exposing the plastic pipes to high pressure which results into their bursting. The residents fear the worst if something is not done very soon.
“We currently have a cholera outbreak, and this water might be contaminated by sewer due to poor drainage in this area. Nobody wants to incur the cost of treating cholera. It is therefore wise to replace these pipes with metal ones,” said Gerishom Ochieng a teacher in the area.
The residents however commended KIWASCO for reacting on time to such situations but they feel it is time to put to an end the menace by replacing the pipes with durable ones.
Efforts to get a comment from the KIWASCO office were futile as calls went unanswered.
