Guards working for private security firms in Kisumu are a frustrated lot, owing to what they term as meager salary payment by their employers.
The Kenya National Private Security Workers Union Nyanza Region Secretary Patrick Sakwa, said he has received numerous complaints from security guards who are totally unhappy with what they earn as salaries.
Talking to our reporter in his office in Kisumu on Wednesday, Sakwa said he has taken the complaints to relevant labour organisations but no positive response so far.
“Some of our members earn as little as Sh2,800 or Sh3,000 per month which cannot sustain them and their families at all,” he said.
Apart from meager salaries, he noted that the guards work for long hours without off days and annual leaves as stipulated in the labour laws, urging employers to be more human and look into their welfare.
“it is a real problem that we are facing, employers are frustrating them because of the amount of money they pay them. They do not have off days and even annual leaves,” added Sakwa.
He urged guards working for private security companies in the area to join hands and collectively fight for their rights.
