Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has announced that the county will be celebrating Baby Pendo human rights day every February 8 to commemorate the life of Pendo who died last year.
In a statement, the governor noted that the county settled on Feb 8 as it was the late Pendo's birthday. He explained that the county legal officer had been directed to work on the paperwork and present it to the county assembly for approval.Governor Nyong'o, however, noted that the ceremony will not be conducted this year since all the necessary arrangements have not been fully implemented but promised to ensure that the event happens in 2019."When baby Samantha Pendo was murdered by state goons last year, I said that Kisumu County would dedicate February 8, Samantha's birthday, as the Samantha Pendo Human Rights Day. I have already instructed my Legal Officer to draft a Bill to be presented to the County Assembly for debate and approval," said the county boss."Unfortunately, due to the many issues that have confronted us in the county and nationally, we have not made much progress. We are certain, however, that during this calendar year, the Bill will be presented to the Assembly and we shall, from next year, observe the 8th of February as a special Human Rights day in Kisumu County," Nyongo's statement read in part. The Governor attacked the police for allegedly using excessive force against protesters, adding that his government will work on ensuring that legal action is taken against those found culpable."It makes me extremely sad to see how cheap the Kenyan Police takes our lives to be. What I have seen in the social media regarding our people who have been wantonly killed by the police in Ahero and Kisumu must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. At the same time, my government will follow up this matter systematically as we did the others last year. However long it takes the culprits must be brought before the law and appropriately punished,” said Nyong’o."Hence I appeal for all the records to be kept properly, including the post-mortems. LUO LIVES MATTER. Let me thank all of you who have stood in solidarity with the families of our departed brothers. I am with you all the time," he added. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Kisumu County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
