The CeC said that the move is aimed at enlightening the residents on issues affecting Kisumu and neighboring counties such as Homabay, Siaya, Vihiga and Nandi.

Onyango said that devolution had provided opportunity for counties to imitate how the central government is being run.

He noted that since the national government owns the national media house; Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), it was time for Kisumu to also own a county media house that could broadcast on issues affecting the county.

Speaking to this writer in his office on Monday, the Communications and IT boss said that the move was also aimed at providing employment opportunities to residents in various fields.

“We will of course need presenters, reporters, editors, business related expertise, public relations officers among others,” said Onyango.

“This will go a long way in ensuring that we reduce the dependency ratio in Kisumu and a step towards eradicating extreme poverty in the youth,” he said.

Onyango however ruled out claims that the media house being set up by Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang Nyongo was meant to be the county media station, saying that it was the senator’s personal property.
