Kisumu County Senator, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o has pledged to establish a corruption-free County if elected governor during the August 8 general election.
Nyong’o, who is eyeing the county’s top seat on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, was speaking on Friday during the launch of his campaign manifesto at a Kisumu hotel.
He vowed to invest in a forensic audit of the county’s expenditure besides assessing the assets, liabilities as well as pending debts hence bringing those he dubbed as “pilfering” county funds to book.
He said that the county had great potential but had become a disappointing underachiever due to poor governance that lacked proper planning skills that are needed in stimulation of any economy.
He observed that Kisumu was performing below its potential and had not met its targets as envisioned in the Kisumu Urban Project that was aimed at transforming Kisumu to an international city.
He said that if elected governor, his administration will capitalise on youth empowerment who dominated the county’s population by building an ultra-modern art facility besides increasing employment opportunities so as to reduce pressure on the dwindling employment in the formal sector.
Nyong'o promised to jump-start the sugar industry in the county that at the moment he said was on its knees despite guzzling a lot of funds.
He said his administration will provide an enabling environment for the business by constructing light rail systems for transportation and also invest in capacity building of the cane farmers.
