Women in Muhoroni, Kisumu County have been urged to report gender based violence to the relevant authorities.

Grace Aketch from the Women Rights Awareness Programme (WRAP) said that most of them usually undergo violence in their homes and suffer in silence, yet there are channels that can help them.

“From my line of duty, I have come across many women who are undergoing violence in their homes but unable to speak out due to fear of victimization by their oppressors," said Aketch.

Aketch who was speaking during a sensitization programme said that women should take advantage of gender desks available at police stations.

Aketch said that the more women speak the faster it will be easier to eliminate gender based violence in our society.

She added that women need to shun oppressive cultural beliefs that somehow promote gender based violence.

“One reason why many don't speak out is because their culture dictates that they are inferior to others. That is not the case because we are all equal," said Aketch.

Aketch said when women undergo violence their children end suffering.

She called on the government to enact legislation that will provide harsh punishment to those who commit violence against women and children.
