Kisumu County youths have been challenged to join village polytechnics in order to acquire skills.
Speaking yesterday at Tom-Mboya Labour College at a forum meant to create awareness among youths, Paul Were, Nyalenda ‘B’ MCA, challenged the county youths to sharpen their skills by joining village polytechnics.
“The youth will acquire new skills by attending polytechnics and this will reduce the high rate of unemployment and dependency ratio,” Were said.
“We should only encourage them to engage their time in the skills they acquire by giving them capital to start businesses of their own hence improve the economy through self-employment,” Were added.
Rural gender sociologist Florence Atera asked the youths not to shy away from joining village polytechnics. She further emphasized that the village polytechnics will help them acquire skills and challenged them to be bosses of their own by starting their businesses.
Atera asked leaders to help fund youths who had acquired skills by initiating workshops that will keep them engaged.
“We need to help our youths shape their skills, this will promote their sense of belonging by initiating self employed workshops,” added Atera.
