The filthy Kachok dumpsite in Kisumu town has finally been relocated to Kajulu, Kisumu East sub county.
Its relocation started on Monday as lorries descended on the site and begun ferrying garbage that had for long caused discomfort to residents of the city.
Senator Fred Outa, County secretary Dr Olang'o Onudi and Chief of Staff Patrick Ouya led a group of residents to the site to kick start the relocation of the dumpsite.
A press statement released on Monday from Governor Anyang' Nyong'o's office said that the county chief had initiated an elaborate plan to relocate the infamous dumpsite.
"Today (Monday) the CeC Water and Environment Salmon Orimba alongside City Manager Doris Ombara flagged off trucks to Kajulu where the landfill is located. This is inline with the governor's 10 point plan during unveiling of his Manifesto, where he pledged to ensure the lakeside city is cleaned and Kachok dump site solid waste is recycled and used for making fertilizers and chemicals," the statement read in part.
Previous attempts to relocate the dumpsite failed as residents moved to court challenging the project.
The relocation of the dumpsite was one of Nyong'o's flagship projects.
