A Catholic priest stunned mourners of a funeral when he dared witchdoctors to prove themselves by casting a spell on him. During the burial of the late Elizabeth Masaa Kimanzi, 87, at Kavililo village, Migwani sub-county, Priest Paul Mathenge called on any witchdoctor present to try casting a spell on him.
"I want those who claim they possess wizardry to put me under a spell now. Where are they? Can they put their charms on me if they really exist," said Mathenge as quoted by The Standard. According to reports the priest wanted to put shame to those engaging in witchcraft after villagers took part in a Kamba oath called 'ngata' ( taking of mix of goat's blood and waste).
'Ngata' is believed to bring out the truth during village conflicts on the person being accused and the accuser.
Priest Mathenge criticized the act and asked residents to shy away from conflict.
In the past those accused of being witchdoctors were hung and beaten in a ritual called 'King'ole' .
