Kitui County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich has asked residents of residents of Mutha, Kitui South not to sell their pastures to Somalia Camel herders.
Speaking at Kefri Center during a consultative meeting with officers from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), the county commissioner said selling pastures is causing the residents more harm than good.
The state officials said that the foreign herders have been invading the area, which has increased conflicts among different groups.
“We discourage the people of Mutha from accepting cash from the invaders so as to allow them graze their livestock in the area and action will be taken against those found condoning the illegal dwellers,” as quoted by Kituionline.com.
The county commissioner also said that the acts of foreign herders looking after their animals in the area have affected the fight against tribal conflicts in the recent past. Several incidents of attacks on the locals have been reported across Ukambani over years.
He also said that the national government is committed to ensuring that the gun branding herders leave the area. Residents have been lamenting over increased incidents of locals being attacked by the defiant herders.
