At least 55 orphans from Kitutu Masaba constituency have been approved to benefit from Swanya Foundation scholarship that will enable them at least finish their primary and secondary school studies.
Businessman-turned politician Victor Swanya on Tuesday issued about 20 scholarships at Manga and Rigoma areas with those from Gesima region scheduled to get the scholarships on Thursday.
According to Mr Swanya, the 55 had successfully applied and the panel only considered total orphans since most of them were in dire need.
“The panel selected 55 students from different regions in Kitutu Masaba and most of them were total orphans. They will be supported by the foundation till they complete their education,” Swanya told HiviSasa.com on phone.
“We look forward to extend the same to partial orphans besides giving opportunities to brilliant students as we have done before,” he added.
Swanya said the foundation will also work closely with institutions from the region to donate library books in a bid to boost education standards from the region that have deteriorated in the recent past.
“My foundation is looking forward to work with school heads by donating library books to institutions. Personally, I am not impressed with our performance as a region both in primary and secondary levels in national exams. We need to equip our schools for excellence,” he said.
Some of the orphans from Gesima who are set to benefit from the foundation have already expressed their delight and are ready to excel in their academics.
“I am very delighted that the foundation has given me and my brother a second chance in academics. This is massive and I am ready to set the pace,” said Asha Mouko.
