Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri says about 1.3 million Kenyans have been affected by the drought situation in the country.

Kilifi, noted Kiunjuri, is the worst hit of the 23 counties affected by the famine.

According to the minister, the government will spend Sh90 million to feed Kilifi residents.

According to the Daily Nation, the government has also dug boreholes to provide water for the affected residents.

Tana River, Kwale, West Pokot, Tharaka-Nithi counties are among counties that have also been affected by the drought.

In Tana River County,the minister said the government has spent Sh75 million to help farmers.

"There is no report of any Kenyan who has died of hunger," Kiunjuri said as quoted by the Daily Nation.

He added that several ministries are working together to ensure no Kenyan starves.

"We would like to assure that the government is on top of this. There is no alarm," he added.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said the Treasury has released Sh254 million but the true cost of such intervention will be known after the relevant ministries assess their need.

He added that the ministries of Water, Health, Agriculture, Devolution will handle intervention programmes and will meet to assess the money needed for the exercise.
