Elections at in Yatta Sub-County have been sKiviko Farmers Co-operative Societyuspended on Thursday morning after the farmers disagreed on the election criteria resulting in chaos.
The society had already conducted elections in the thirty sub-branches in both Kathiani and Masinga successfully but got a hitch at Yatta prompting them to suspend the election until they agree on how to go about the process.
The Sub-county Co-operative officer Elijah Kobia told HiviSasa that his office had by-laws for every sub-branch and it was difficult to change the criteria of voting since the farmers had agreed on this before the by-laws were presented to his office and it was necessary they abide by them.
He said that the only way the election was going to commence was for the farmers to agree on the issue.
Already, a meeting has been scheduled with the leaders where farmers will later be brought on board to set an election date.
He said that the current management in the office at the affected areas was to hold office until elections were conducted.
He commended other co-operatives in the area that had already paid dividends to their members and conducted elections peacefully without the police intervening.
Yatta OCPD led a group of anti-riot police in calming the members who had resulted to chaos and later chased away some of those causing chaos before the meeting was called off.
