Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (Kiwasco) managing director, David Onyango has been elected to the board of the Global Water Operators Partnership Alliance (Gwopa).
Gwopa is a United Nations(UN)-Habitat body promoting improvement of water services in the world.
Onyango will represent African water operators for the next four years. He won against other aspirants from including South and West Africa.
In a press statement on Sunday by Kiwasco, Onyango was elected at the just concluded third general assembly meeting in Barcelona that took place from September 16 to September18.
The assembly brought together over 85 countries spread all over Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, Asia, Pacific, and Europe and North America.
Gwopa was formed in 2006 out of a recommendation of the Hashimoto action plan launched in March 2004 by UN Advisory board on Water and Sanitation.
The formation was a global mechanism to promote exchange of ideas and skills between water utilities to improve experience and expertise.
Onyango has been credited with the transformation of the company from a loss making entity to one of the leading water companies in Kenya and the region after joining Kiwasco in 2006.
He also pioneered a water operators’ partnership (WOP) between National Water Uganda and Kiwasco in the early phases of the WOP program.
In the last 4 years he has been implementing a WOP between Kiwasco and Vitens-Evides International, a Dutch consortium of companies, on Non-Revenue Water management.
In 2013, David was honoured with a state medal conferred by the President of Kenya for distinguished service to the Nation.
Prior to joining Kiwasco he worked in various technical positions in the water sector where he was involved with engineering designs and construction of various water facilities.
