The Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (Kiwasco) plans to use short message service (SMS) platform to replace paper-based billing.
In a message to its clients, Kiwasco said it planned to exploit he electronic platform to eliminate challenges of paper bills.
“Kiwasco would like to inform its esteemed customers and stakeholders that from the end of July 2016, the company will be sending bills to its customers using SMS as opposed to hand delivery as has been the norm,” read a statement from the company.
The digitisation could see the sanitary service provider send home a number of its staff it relied on for metre reading and bill deliveries.
“This mode of distribution will be fast and convenient, thus increasing our efficiency in service delivery,” it said.
The company said it will pilot the new platform for three months before adopting it.
“From the month of July customers will receive both paper and SMS bills for three months. Subsequently, only SMS bills will be sent.”
The company asked customers to update their mobile contacts so as not to be left out.
Power supplier Kenya Power has gone digital with pre-paid meter boxes and asking clients to do their own readings to reduce the number of times they have to send staff to check meter boxes.
