Kenya’s largest referral hospital is on the spot over insecurity claims. Messages doing rounds on social media indicate that some patients especially those breastfeeding in the maternity win have been sexually harassed.
The social messages allege that the hospital attendants have been sexually harassing breastfeeding mothers, who often have to wake up at odd hours to nurse their infants who are kept in incubators floors apart.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Union has called on speedy investigations into the matter.
The KMPDU officials have met the hospital’s CEO Lilly Koros, while encouraging victims and witness to report the case to security agents on information that can be useful in tracking the perpetrators.
“We have visited the facility; the ground floor and the third floor, where the mothers are and indeed the nursery and so far, there is no incident that has been reported. From the CCTV there is no conclusive evidence,” he said.
He added: “Patients must feel safe in the hospital. This matter should be thoroughly investigated,”
According to the messages on social media, mortuary attendants are the notorious criminals at the facility, and they take advantage of deserted corridors and faulty lifts to commit the crimes.
