Teaching has been paralyzed at the Kenya Medical Training College in Kisumu as teaching and non teaching staff boycotted work due to nonpayment of a collective bargaining agreement hike. Kenya Union of Domestic Hotels, Educational Institutions and Hospitals workers union Kisumu secretary Enos Keronze said their union national officials signed a CBA in 2012 but that has not been affected. Keronze said they are demanding an accrued salary hike of 24 percent. “We demand that the 24 percent pay increment be paid at once, the union had given a strike notice that expired yesterday,” he said. He said the union had given a seven days notice to the college director that expired occasioning the strike. Keronze said they will be on strike as long as it takes until the college management pays the CBA. The students threatened to join the strike by Thursday if the government fails to address the issue. Secretary General Student’s representative Peter Isasi says told the KMTC headquarters that students are suffering as a result of the strike by the staff. Isasi said most students have paid school fees and it remains painful for those students doing parallel courses to go without getting education.
