A section of KNUT officials from Wareng in Uasin Gishu County have accused NHIF and TSC of not involving the teachers in the negotiation of the NHIF rates.
Speaking in Eldoret on Tuesday, the Knut executive secretary John Boor said that a teacher who used to contribute Sh320 per month is now being deducted Sh1,500, which a huge increment.
“NHIF did what they did un-procedural since nobody bothered to tell teachers about the new rates before they were gazette, and the rates are so high at the moment,” said Boor.
Boor added that the new NHIF rates of Sh500 will lock out many people in the informal sector from the cover.
“Government services are supposed to be subsidized, and affordable but the new NHIF rates are no longer affordable,” added Boor.
He further added that Knut officials are already waiting for the implementation of the comprehensive medical cover agreement they have signed with AON.
Teachers in other parts of the country have also raised their voice over the same, with others threating to even go to court if the move is not halted.
