Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) officials from Masaba North District in Kitutu Masaba Sub County, Nyamira County, have petitioned Teachers Service Commission to avoid transferring teachers far away from their homes.
Speaking to the press at Keroka, the Knut branch chair, Meshack Obonyo, asked TSC to give the action of transferring teachers a second thought as it is hectic and costly to most of them.
“Teachers have committed their energies to teach children but it is demoralising to transfer a teacher for instance from Keroka to Risa near Ramasha or to South Mugirango yet their salary is meagre to meet the cost of operation in their new stations,” complained Obonyo.
He challenged the employer to consider other important factors before transferring a teacher to a new place.
“Some of the teachers are old while others are sick, which becomes a challenge to them when they have been transferred to new schools. They will take long time to adopt and this will affect the performance of a school,” indicated Obonyo.
According to the union’s branch treasurer Evans Kalulu, the teachers’ employer should not transfer teachers in the mid of a term which he says affects performance of schools.
