The Kenya National Union of Teachers Thika sub-county office has hit on the area Public Health Officer for the closure of Garissa Road Primary School two weeks ago in Kiandutu saying the officer is wasting the pupils’ learning time.
Led by the Union Secretary General Joseph N. Mungai, the group said that schools’ learning schedule is ongoing and Garissa Road Pupils are lagging behind as their fellows are going on with learning.
Mungai said that if the pupils failure in this year’s exams then it will be blamed on the Health officer as he should have gotten a better solution to the problem rather than closing the institution indefinitely.
“He could have helped the school instead of closing the institution and leaving them in darkness. If these pupils fail then he will have to stand accountable for the the failure,” warned Mungai.
The densely populated school was closed after their latrines were discovered to be in a mess, thus, according to the Health Officer, the school was not in a position to construct new latrines forcing the pupils to use the ‘full’ ones in the compound exposing their lives in danger of attracting diseases.
The residents raised concerns over the issue and the Health Officer closed the school indefinitely leaving the parents and the school board struggling to construct new ones.
The area MCA Kennedy Mwangi has also hit on the Officer for the closure of the school and offered to help them construct standard latrines in the school immediately for the re-opening of the institution.
The Secretary General was speaking to the press on Monday in his Thika town office. This happens even after missing two weeks learning days following the recent teachers’ strike.
