The Kenya National Union of Teachers, Kisii branch Secretary General Shem Nyaundi, has maintained that teachers in the North Eastern part of Kenya, who don’t come from those regions be transferred to safer places.

Speaking at the Union's office at Kisii Mwalimu Sacco, Nyaundi blamed the government for not listening to teachers' demands.

He recommended teachers hailing from the volatile areas because the targeted ones are the non-residents and Muslim converts.

"My stand is that teachers should boycott duties because of the fear for their security in the volatile areas of North Eastern. The government has no option rather than having a swap, so that the Muslim converts can be transferred and work there," Nyaundi said.

His sentiments have been supported by Kisii Governor James Ongwae following a terrorist attack at Garissa University College, where more than 150 students and staff members died. The last week massacre was carried out by the Al-Shabab militia group that claimed responsibility.

This is a second terrorist attack in five months brackets, whereby the first one took place in Mandera on December last year and more than 20 teachers died in the attack.

Most teachers from Kisii and other parts of the country have not resumed duty since January this year and they want to be transferred to secure areas.
