A senior Knut official from Nyamira has said the government of Kenya should respect teachers by increasing their pay as directed by the court without any condition or call for dialogue to solve the stalemate.

Speaking on Saturday at Kebuko Primary School during a farewell party of a teacher, Masaba North Knut Secretary General Mr Moses Onwon’ga faulted the government’s approach following the landmark ruling that awarded teachers a salary increment of up to 60 per cent that has since been appealed by the TSC.

Mr Onwon’ga said the government had taken teachers for granted and urged it to adopt alternative dispute resolutions to solve the crisis before it escalates.

“We are the teachers of this country and I am not happy with the way we are being treated. The court made a ruling and it was absurd to see the government appeal to that. It will be important for us to mediate rather than go to court to solve the issue,” said Mr Onwon’ga.

The Secretary General urged teachers to continue executing their duties without interruption besides urging them to give Knut time to deal with the issue.

“I urge all teachers present that all isn't lost. Please continue executing your obligations and all will be settled by the union. In case it fails, we will get to the usual way after 21 days,” said Mr Onwon’ga.

Onwong’a questioned the government’s commitment to fighting corruption besides calling for the President to act firm on the suspects.

“As Knut, I want to categorically state that we aren't convinced with methodologies used in fighting corruption. The government has to come clean and prevent rampant corruption in the system,” added Mr Onwon’ga.
