The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nakuru branch chairman Muhia Mungai has ridiculed the new rules announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi last week.
Mungai said the new rules are a direct oppression to principals in secondary schools and cannot curb exam cheating in totality since the CS did not even consult education stakeholders on such matters.
“These rules are an oppression to principals because they are the people who will be held responsible in case there is exam cheating while in the real sense, the CS should deal with the root cause which is the people at the examinations setting centres,” said Mungai on Friday when contacted for comment over the matter.
Mungai further stated the rules cannot be effective because since the practicality of the new rules is only applicable to boarding schools and not day secondary schools.
“You see, this will only touch boarding schools where students do not go home but what about those in secondary schools? “he posed.
He advised Matiangi to deal with exam cheating starting from the top and not the bottom.
“If he says students cheat, they cheat because somebody in his office leaks the exam and in the real sense, he should deal with those up there, nearest to him and not the students,” said Mungai.
