The Kenya National Union of Teachers Chepkoilel branch secretary general Sammy Bor has urged the national government, through the Ministry of Education, to lower the retirement age of teachers from the current 60 to 50 years.
He said this will pave way for the unemployed teachers to be employed since thousands are jobless despite completing their respective courses
“We have a high rate of unemployment in the country and reviewing the retirement age to 50 years will help create employment opportunities to many young and brilliant minds that remain unutilized today," he said in his office, Wednesday.
"At the moment a graduate can wait for over 15 years for her to secure a job, when will they be employed yet the old are still in office?” he posed.
He, however, urged Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to employ more teachers to improve the quality of education offered in schools since the current number is a drop in the ocean.
“TSC should do something to save our children from getting quantity education to quality education since at the moment Kenya has a shortage of over 100,000 teachers thus overworking the few teachers,” noted Bor.
