Kisumu East Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) branch chairman Peter Otiende has put on notice elected politicians who have failed to join them in the protest over poor pay.

Otiende said politicians have steered clear of the issue save for some very few elected leaders who have stood in solidarity with them.

“This is a warning to elected leaders who have abandoned us in the hour of need. Their support would have been important but they have kept off,” he said.

The chairman noted that teachers voted overwhelmingly for some politicians who have since failed to add a voice into the 'misery' they are facing.

Speaking to the press on Monday at the Knut offices after holding demonstrations in the town with union members, Otiende said in the 2017 general election they will only vote politicians who are with them in the course to put pressure on the government to implement the pay rise awarded to them by the Industrial Court.

“Colleagues, lets us watch keenly these politicians, some have abandoned us as we fight for our right. Let us vote wisely in 2017,” he said.

Otiende singled out Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo and his Nyando counterpart Fred Outa for standing with teachers in the agitation for the pay increment.
