The Kenya National Union of Teachers(KNUT) has declared that it will not defend school heads and boards of Management(BOMs) found to have conspired to flout the official school fees and levies guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education.
The KNUT National Treasurer John Matiang'i has warned that the Union will not condone headteachers who flout the Ministry's gazetted school fees guidelines, instead, they will be required to carry their crosses as individuals and not as Union members.
Speaking on Sunday afternoon at Matongo village of Giasaiga sub-location in Sameta sub-county during the burial of Mama Peris Moraa, the KNUT National Treasurer warned school heads against succumbing to pressure from greedy BOMs to increase school fees and other levies contrary to the Ministry's guidelines.
"If any BOM or school head has a genuine reason for wanting to increase school fees they must consult the Ministry for advice and approval before implementing the new school fees structure,"advised Matiang'i.
Matiang'i said it was ironical for some schools to increase their fees in the name of buying school buses which he said, overburdened poor parents.
