The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has asked head teachers to be in the lead in helping curb rising cases of girls dropping out of school.
KNUT Chepkoilel branch Secretary General Sammy Bor has further blamed teachers for failing to take appropriate actions in addressing the matter."Teachers are the first people to notice that a certain school girl is missing and he or she is supposed to inquire about her whereabouts," said the Chepkoilel KNUT boss in Eldoret town, Saturday."Teachers should be the watchdog of our girls in school and in case she fails to report back to school after holidays, they should immediately report the matter to the authorities for actions to be taken. Gone are the days when girls were disregarded," he added.Bor, however, called upon parents to closely monitor the behaviors of their children instead of leaving it to teachers."Cases such as girls dropping out of school will be a thing of the past if parents will play their role well. You should monitor your child's behaviors," he noted.
