Former Subukia parliamentarian Koigi wa Wamwere has acknowledged the existence of cartels in different sectors of the nation.
Speaking on Sauti ya Mwananchi Radio Saturday, the former assistant minister recalled his woes in the hands of powerful individuals in 1978.
Koigi who recalled maximizing on a state allowance for unpaid importation of products to import maize from Zambia narrated how his efforts were barricaded by people who were also in the same trade.
"The cartels have always been there. I remember how they trampled on my attempts to import maize from Zambia in 1978. All my efforts were frustrated by people well placed in the government," he said.
The person behind his woes, he said, also headed an agricultural body then, and succeeded in keeping him off the business, apparently to have it all to himself and his cronies.
"My biggest assailant was also the chair of the relevant maize body then. I later realized that he was also eyeing the same market hence his move to stop me to have all the market to himself," said Wamwere who, however, did not reveal any names.
This comes at a time when the cartels have been blamed for sabotaging politicians throughout the nation for their personal gains, the biggest victim being Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who has accused them of slowing his development projects.
