Former Subukia lawmaker Koigi Wamwere is blaming members of parliament for their confused decision-making on the ICC case.

Speaking to this writer, Koigi said Kenya became a member of the ICC voluntarily because Kenyans never wanted to suffer again the horrors of dictatorship. He added that the decision to embrace the ICC was due to the fact that Kenyan courts are not independent or strong enough. This meant that the courts could not render justice or hold leaders to account if they committed crimes.

"Our leaders preferred the ICC to a local tribunal, not because they wanted to but to escape justice. Not sure they can escape justice from ICC now, the leaders want the international court to terminate cases against them and for Kenya to withdraw from the ICC so that no other Kenyan president would ever be prosecuted in an international or local court," said Koigi.

Koigi added that Kenyan leaders must not seek the withdrawal of the country from ICC, as this will give other perpetrators a chance to commit crimes and go scot-free.

“The truth is, whether Kenyan leaders are found guilty and jailed, or innocent and set free, Kenyans will continue to need ICC because the danger of dictatorship coming back to mass murder, perpetrate genocide and terrorise Kenyans is not over,” added Koigi.

He warned that if Kenya withdrew from the ICC, Kenyans would lose protection from the dictatorship of other leaders.

"ICC was not established to just prosecute Uhuru and Ruto but anyone who commits crimes against humanity," concluded Koigi.
