At the water plant, Governor Korane discovered that the water company was losing vast amounts through leakages.

The new county chief said that more than 15 per cent of water in Garissa is lost through leakages which he said can serve 1,000 homes.

The governor further said that the officer in charge of the plant has ignored his duties and also lacks necessary papers.

“Simple things like fixing a leaking elevated storage tank don’t require much skill. This is negligence and lack of commitment to duty,” said Mr Korane.

According to the governor, who was accompanied by his deputy, Mr Abdi Dagene, said the visit was aimed at understanding the working condition and service delivery at the plant.

He said that based on the prevailing challenges he observed, his administration will initiate measures to tackle the poor service delivery at the plant.

During his inauguration, governor Korane said that the people of Garissa have suffered a perennial water crisis in the last four and a half years which has affected the economy of the county.

He said that his administration will tackle the water crisis by undertaking a thorough audit of the water sector including GAWASCO.

“We will undertake deliberate measures and target investment in this sector to facilitate and expedite access to clean and safe water. We will address the water issues in Garissa township within the next 100 days,” said the governor.
